Feminism and Me

I created this blog as a way to voice my views and opinions about politics, the media, literature, and life in general; without being on myspace(which I use for personal stuff) or Ak! facebook. I'll try to put the fun stuff in my life in here as well. About me: I'm a second year college student studying psychology, my aspirations for that would be definitely to get my doctorate and help as many people as possible. When I was 17 I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and spent a month in a treatment facility. Around that time I decided I wanted to help people who were going through the same things I was going through hence; my psychology ambitions. I also love to write short stories, poems, novels, you name it! I would love o have a career in writing as well which is why I'm very excited to start this blog.

I am also taking my first women's studies classes which got me interested in feminism. Although women have the right to vote and mostly an equal standing in American society as men, our plight as feminists is far from over. The health care coverage in our country is abysmal, the fact that women can be denied birth-control because the pharmacist doesn't feel its within their moral beliefs to sell it to them is atrocious, the fact that males in congress are the ones deciding our reproductive rights is horrifying, and there are so, so, many more issues facing young women today. I was a little apprehensive to start learning about feminism but now that I've started I can't turn back feminism is now a part of me and I think always has been.

Well that's just a little bit about me but its almost bed time so I gotta go, I'll write more later. I'm so excited to finally get this blog started and to start sharing my views with you all! thank you so much for reading!

Also every entry I am going to include a book I recommend because I think reading really is the way to learn and open your minds to new ideas. (I'm a very avid reader!) For today because the topic was Feminism and me I'll recommend my new favorite feminist book for young people Full Frontal Feminism By: Jessica Valenti
It's a very in your face book and reads easily like a conversation with a good friend wit lots of juicy gossip supported by real facts.

Thanks again,
-A
